Large Wall Tapestries
The weaving of large wall tapestries has been in around for hundreds of years. In fact, the basic principles applied to their weaving have not changed. A loom is still used and the weft and warp set of threads still form the basic structure of the tapestry. The most significant change experienced in the weaving of large tapestries is the computerization of the looms. This has allowed for the reproduction of more intricate designs in large wall tapestries with minimal effort on the part of the weaver. This means that you can now have a photo or work of fine art reproduced as a tapestry.
Some functions of large tapestries have also changed over the years. Large tapestries have always been used to decorate walls in homes, castles and mansions. In the past, the weaving of wall hanging tapestries required a high level of skill and was labor intensive. Large Medieval tapestries were therefore expensive and were only used in the homes of wealthy people. Advances in technology and the introduction of the Jacquard loom have made it easier to produce tapestries of varying designs. Large tapestries are therefore accessible to a wider variety of people today.
Large tapestries were mostly used to communicate messages. These messages could be tales of historical events or propaganda. Many of the wall tapestries recovered from the past show scenes of significant historical events. One such tapestry is the Bayeux tapestry which shows the events that led to the invasion of England and the events that occurred during the invasion.
